Updated guide to root HTC Salsa

July 24, 20120 Comments

One of the things a lot of Android users do when they buy a new Android phone is root it. When gaining root access, it allows users to do such things as flash ROMs and apply themes. Unfortunately, when the device manufacturers release a new update, what it does most of the time is block the old root methods. Basically, it means that whatever method was used for rooting before won’t work anymore. Thankfully, for HTC Salsa users, there’s a root guide that’s just come out that will root HTC Salsa even on its most recent firmware. You know, in case you were thinking of trying it out.

Before we begin, we must issue our standard disclaimer. We are in no way responsible for anything that happens to your phone. When you root your phone, or really doing anything to it, you are assuming the risk.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, it is important to note that this root method is for Windows users only. If you have Mac or Linux, you’ll have to find another way.

How to root HTC Salsa

Let’s get started to root HTC Salsa. All download links will be accessible through our source link at the bottom.

  1. Download the files1.zip from the source link (it’s the first download link)
  2. Open up My Computer, enter the C Drive and create a folder called Android.
  3. Move the files1.zip into the Android folder and extract it there using your favorite zip program.
  4. Go to HTCDev.com and follow their instructions on unlocking your bootloader. Note: This will void your warranty.
  5. Download the recovery image from the source link.
  6. Move it to the Android folder you created earlier and extract it.
  7. Press and hold shift and right click. Select “Open Command Window here”.
  8. On your phone, go into Settings, Applications and turn on USB Debugging. Connect your phone to your computer as “charge only”.
  9. In the Command Prompt Window, copy and paste the following without the quotes: “adb reboot bootloader”
  10. Your phone should reboot into what is called Fastboot USB mode.
  11. In the Command Prompt Window, copy and paste the following without the quotes: “fastboot flash recovery recovery.img”
  12. Since you unlocked your bootloader, this command will install a custom recovery.

From here you have a myriad of options. There are two links in the source link that will take you to where you can get files to download and install in your fresh new custom recovery to simply attain root. The popular way, though, is downloading and installing a ROM. Most ROM threads have instructions on how to install ROMs, but it’s a pretty cookie cutter method. Download a ROM, place it somewhere on your SD card where you can find it, reboot into recovery, wipe data, cache and dalvik, and then finally navigate the menu and flash the ROM. Most custom ROMs come rooted, which means you can skip the rooting step if you intend on using a custom ROM.
