How to update Google Nexus 4 with leaked Android 4.3 Jelly Bean JWR66N firmware

The latest version of Android 4.3 Jelly Bean is yet to be announced but there is already a leak out there. And that lead us to update Google Nexus 4 with the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean using JWR66N firmware. To complete the update we will be using custom recovery like TWRP.

Guys back at XDA have been quite to find the leak and managed to release a pre-rooted and deodexed zip files. Lets look at some of the important changes you will notice. The Camera UI now rotates only the icons rather than rotating the entire application when switching between portrait and landscape camera. Also the Camera App now allows you to use the volume keys to take pictures. Apart from that the Nexus 4 touchscreen is more responsive to lighter touch. There is this dialer now which features a t9 optional function, which needs to be enabled in order to use the numbers to easily search your device for the contacts you wish to call. Google keep is now included as a system application. Its got an improved battery life and fixes for Wi-fi and Bluetooth can be felt. There are many other small additions which will figure out as you keep using it more.

Few pre-requisites before we get started

  • XDA developer Gmillz has managed to create a pre-rooted flashable zip of the Android 4.3 that can be installed using any type if custom recovery such as CWM or TWRP. But Initially Android 4.3 was released as a TWRP backup.
  • There will probably be no loss of data while trying to update your device and the new firmware will install over any ROM that is currently installed on your device.
  • Backup all the data even though the operation involved might result in no loss of data.
  • Also make sure you have enough battery charge for the process to complete without any interruptions. Maintain about 60-70% of your battery.
  • Make sure that you have Android SDK installed on your PC and that the ADB is working. Also make sure that your phone has to on unlocked bootloader. Also we use the TWRP Recovery for this tutorial.
  • Keep in mind that this guide is for advanced Android users and we should not be blamed for any loss of data or in case you brick your device while trying to update it.

How to install leaked Android 4.3 Jelly Bean on Google Nexus 4

  1. First boot your device into TWRP Recovery and create a NANDROID backup of your current ROM using the ‘Backup’ option.
  2. Then download the leaked zip file from here and save the file on your PC.
  3. Now connect your device with your PC and make sure all the android drivers are working properly.
  4. Now move to the TWRP Recovery mode main screen, then select Advanced, then ADB Sideload from TWRP. Check the Wipe Dalvik Cache and Wipe Cache options.
  5. Open command prompt on your PC and type in adb sideload followed by the location path of the zip file downloaded in step 2.
  6. Just wait for the update to be completed. The phone then restarts and you can now unplug it from your pc. Just wait for the phone to boot into normal mode before doing anything.
  7. There you go. You have the latest version of Android 4.3 on your Nexus 4. Have fun!!
