How to update Google Nexus 7 (2013 edition) with Alpha SlimBean Android 4.3 Custom ROM

The 2013 version of Google Nexus 7 is available and be prepared for a flood of custom ROMs coming towards you as we all know that it is close to a pure Android Tablet. SlimBean Team have come up with their alpha release of their latest platform which come with extra features, apps and improved capabilities. This release is based on Jelly Bean 4.3 from AOSP and hence most of the stock features will be available. So, if you need added extra features, better performances and better battery life, then you can definitely apply the alpha release of SlimBean firmware.

This guide will help you update the Asus Google Nexus 7 2013 edition to custom Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with Slim Bean custom ROM firmware. But before we begin the process, there are a few pre-requisites that you need to look into for completing the installation guide.

  • Backup all the data as the operation involved might result in loss of data and might need to recover all the data like the contacts and all. So, take a detailed backup of all your data. You can also make a NANDROID backup using either CWM or TWRP.
  • Then enable the USB debugging option on your phone by going to “Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging”.
  • Also make sure you have enough battery charge for the process to complete without any interruptions. Maintain about 60-70% of your battery.
  • As the update process will require that you root your device, you are bound to lose your warranty as the rooting process is unofficial. But you can always get back by flashing the stock Android firmware.
  • Also make sure that your phone has to on unlocked bootloader. Also you can use the CWM or TWRP Recovery for this tutorial.

How to update Google Nexus 7 (2013 edition) with Alpha SlimBean Android 4.3 Custom ROM

  1. First download the SlimBean zip file from HERE and save the unextracted file on your PC.
  2. Download the Google apps package from here and save the unextracted file on your PC.
  3. Connect your device to your pc and transfer the above downloaded files to your phone’s SD card and disconnect the device from pc.
  4. Now reboot your device into recovery mode .
  5. Then from recovery mode menu, select “wipe data factory reset”, “wipe cache partition” and “wipe dalvick cache”.
  6. Select “+++ go back +++” and return to main recovery menu.
  7. Once done, from the main recovery mode menu, select “install from SD card” and choose the SlimBean zip from SD card. Select and update the file first and then flash the firmware.
  8. Then return, select “install from SD card” and choose the Google Apps zip from SD card. Select and then flash the firmware.
  9. Once done, reboot your device by selecting “reboot system now”.
  10. There you go!! You now have updated your Google Nexus 7 2013 edition with Alpha SlimBean Android Jelly Bean 4.3 custom ROM. Cheers!!
