Well, well, well. It would seem that Samsung and LG are not the only Korean smartphone manufacturers with hard-hitting, high-end devices lined up for this year. LG has the Optimus G Pro in the works, and Samsung is all set to release its Galaxy S flagship phone – the Galaxy S4 which was announced amidst much fanfare last month. Not to mention the purported Galaxy Note 3 which is likely to come out sometime towards the end of the year.

Pantech, a veteran smartphone manufacturer, which was pretty well known during the Windows Mobile days for some of its exciting products, has taken a back seat since the advent of Android over recent years. Not to say that it hasn’t released any new Android devices, but most of them were confined to the mid-range or entry level. of course, Pantech has also released some exciting devices as well, such as the Vega No. 6 and the No. 5. And this time, they are set to make a comeback to the high-end Android device space with a brand new device, called the Pantech Vega Iron.

This isn’t the first we are hearing of the Vega Iron, and there have been a few rumors that had surfaced a few days ago regarding this flagship device from Pantech, along with a few details on specs. Pantech has taken the straightforward route, and published details and images of this new upcoming device, via a press release on their official website, laying all the rumors and whispers to rest.

The Pantech Vega Iron sports an incredibly sleek and elegant, metallic look showing off what Pantech is calling the Endless Metal design, packs a bezel-less 5-inch Hi-Bright Insel 720p display (although 1080p would have been more like it given that’s what every new flagship 5-inch device is packing since the beginning of this year, but 720p would do just fine), a powerful 1.7GHz Quad-Core Snapdragon 600 chip, which essentially puts this bad boy directly in competition, performance wise, with the Samsung Galaxy S4 as well as the HTC One, both of which pack the same chip.

The rest of the specs are also perfectly in line with what one would expect from a top-notch high end device – LTE compatibility, a 13MP main camera plus a 2.1 MP front facer, 2GB of RAM to keep things ticking along smoothly, 32GB of internal storage and SD card support for expandable storage which is supported upto a massive 2TB!! I wonder if they make SD cards with that much! The Vega Iron also comes in at just 8.8mm thickness and weighs in at 153gms. Pretty thin and light.

The only thing that seems like a bit of a let-down is the measly 2150 mAh battery, although it should suffice for most average users. The Pantech Vega iron will ship running Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean out of the box, and it will likely be updated to Android 4.2.2 soon enough. It will be available in Black as well as White color options too. No details yet on pricing or which carriers it wil be headed towards in the U.S. But with the official announcement out now, it’s just a matter if time before we know more. Given the fact that AT&T has been carrying Pantech handsets, it might not be a far stretch to expect to see the Vega Iron there.

What do you think? Does the Vega iron pose any real threat to the almighty Galaxy S4 and the classy looking HTC One? Let us know your thoughts in comments below.
